Resume Templates

The resume is often the first contact a potential employer or recruiter will have with a candidate for a job and it may be one of hundreds of cv’s or resumes that the employer will have to sort through to find potential candidates. They are used to screen applicants and may only be given a brief look when assessing who might be suitable for interview. A good template is vital in getting the resume to stand out from the crowd and to be read rather than passed over.

A resume, or cv in the UK, is generally short and restricted to two side of A4. It should highlight specific keywords related to the job being applied for. Many people will customise a resume for each job being applied to so as to highlight the most relevant parts and make them stand out at the top so that the person screening the application can see immediately that the person meets the necessary criteria.

Resume Styles

Resume templates can come in many styles in terms of layout, fonts, colours, formatting etc. They generally have standard ways of laying out the  information about qualifications, education, experience and job history. The most common is the reverse chronological resume in which the candidates experience is laid out starting with the most recent and stepping back through previous experience. The reverse chronological resume may separate education and employment histories if they overlap so that they can be focused on seperately.

Another style of resume is the functional type in which skills and professional capabilities are listed and emphasised rather than a chronological list. This can be very useful for those wanting to highlight skills and experience gained in previous roles that may be lost in a chronological list or not given the proper weight. It is also useful for jobs that require very specific skills or experience and ensures that they are clearly highlighted on the resume.
